City Council Update 10/5/2016

October 5, 2016

Ordinance: Trump Sign Removal

An ordinance introduced at Council, co-sponsored by Alderman Laurino, calls for the removal of the honorary "Trump Plaza" sign outside the Trump Tower along the Chicago River. The honorary sign went up in 2006, while the tower at 401 N. Wabash Ave. was under construction. The legislation cites many reasons for removal of the honor, including Donald Trump's comments about immigrants, minorities, and women, as well as his mean-spirited remarks about Chicago during the first presidential debate that misrepresent and discredit the positive attributes of the city.
New Agency: COPA

After months of debate, meetings, and public hearings, the City Council voted 39 to 8 to approve a new agency, the Civilian Office on Police Accountability (COPA). COPA will have the power to investigate police shootings and allegations of officer misconduct and will be able to recommend changes to police policy and procedure. The Council also approved creating a new position, Deputy Inspector General for Public Safety, to audit the new police accountability system and identify patterns and practices that violate constitutional rights.
