City Council Update 9/15/2017

September 15, 2017

The City Council passed two resolutions related to DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.) Alderman Laurino is a co-sponsor of both resolutions, which call on the federal government to continue DACA and ultimately approve the DREAM Act, and the state government to take action to protect Dreamers, including setting up a legal protection fund like the City already has done.

The City Council also passed a new ordinance at the September 6 meeting aimed at reducing the market for stolen cell phones. The ordinance makes it harder to sell a stolen cell phone, therefore reducing the incentive to steal cell phones.

Lastly, the Alderman was also a co-sponsor of a resolution calling for the passage of HB40 in the Illinois Legislature. That bill would protect a woman's right to choose in several ways. The law would allow State Medicaid and insurance of state employees to cover abortions. It also would make the right to choose the law in Illinois even if Roe v. Wade was overturned.
