City Council Update 2/23/2018

February 23, 2018

An ordinance introduced by Alderman Laurino passed the City Council on Friday, February 23, 2018. The ordinance improves the City’s sexual harassment protections regarding sexual harassment involving City elected officials. It provides that elected officials cannot sexually harass constituents, developers or business owners. The ordinance used to only apply only to harassment of other elected officials or City employees. It states that sexual harassment cannot be used to influence any type of governmental decision, broadening from the prior limitation that it must apply to an individual’s employment. Finally, a person’s response to sexual harassment cannot impact any decision regarding the individual’s client or employer, instead of the prior standard which just covered impacts to the specific person.
