Free Oak Trees

May 10, 2014

A limited supply (about 100) of swamp white oak saplings will be available for free.  They can be picked up Saturday, May 10th (between 9am and 4pm) at the North Park Village Nature Center, 5801 N. Pulaski Rd., Chicago.  Just in time for Mother’s Day!  They should be planted within 2 days to insure survival.  Please call the Nature Center if you would like 1 or more--(312) 744-5472.

The saplings are relatively small (approx. 2’ tall).  Planting oaks is vital now as they’re disappearing in the understory of natural areas, and the fact that they’re instrumental in supporting wildlife.  We’re trying to educate the public about them and encourage them to plant them in their yards.

Did you know that as a family, oaks attract over 500 species of moths and butterflies, as well as a number of other insects, birds, and other wildlife species.  They contribute to the earth’s biodiversity in a huge way.  And, unfortunately, they are disappearing from our regions forests as invasive plants are limiting their germination in the understory.  They need your help.  So plant an oak and help restore our city’s biodiversity and overall health along the way.  You’ll be glad you did!
