Infrastructure: Foster Closed for Bridge Project

September 7, 2016 to October 10, 2016

TRAFFIC/CONSTRUCTION ALERT: IDOT Road Closure on Foster Avenue

FOSTER AVENUE will be closed to through-traffic from CICERO to PULASKI beginning WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, for an Illinois Department of Transportation project to rebuild the Foster Avenue bridge over the Chicago River. The work will consist of reconstruction of the concrete abutments at each end of the bridge, hydro-scarification of the existing bridge deck, and polymer overlay that should extend the life of the bridge for many years.

Here are details we received from the State:

  • START DATE: September 7, 2016
  • (Estimated) END DATE: October 10, 2016
  • Contractor: Lorig Construction Co., Des Plaines, IL
  • Contract Cost: $309,108.20

IMPACT:
There will be a TOTAL CLOSURE of FOSTER AVENUE for the duration of the job, with local traffic allowances. The reason for this is that the way the original bridge was reconstructed in 1985 makes stage construction impossible. The total closure will enable the job to be completed in far less time and at a far lesser cost.

DETOUR ROUTE

  • EASTBOUND: At Foster and Cicero, take Cicero SOUTH to Lawrence, take Lawrence EAST to Pulaski Road, take Pulaski NORTH to Foster, then continue EAST on Foster. Local traffic will be allowed.
  • WESTBOUND: Reverse of above.
  • Here is an additional closure map. (PDF)
