Community Alert

May 26, 2015

Memorial Day weekend brought criminal activity to the 39th Ward. I have been working closely with the leadership of our 17th District police department and can share information about two incidents.

On Saturday, May 23, shots were fired in the Mayfair community around Kenneth and Gunnison. Two male suspects exchanged fire but it appears that no one was injured. The 17th District uniform and tactical unit officers, as well as city detectives and gang units, are conducting a meticulous and active investigation. At this time, it appears that this violence did not originate in the neighborhood and the police have assured me that this area is not considered gang territory. The police believe that this is possibly internal gang violence.

On Monday, May 25, a shooting occurred around Hamlin and Berteau. Again, it is believed at this time that this was an internal gang incident. This is also an active investigation and the police are thoroughly investigating this shooting.

Any shooting in any Chicago neighborhood is unacceptable. However, it can be even more troubling when the violence happens in relatively safe communities. We are fortunate that our local 17th District Police are among the finest law enforcement officers in Chicago and I thank them for their dedication to our community.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about these or other criminal activity, I invite you to join me and the 17th District leadership team at the next CAPS meeting on Wednesday, May 27, at the Mayfair Church (behind the Salvation Army), 5020 N. Pulaski at 7:30 p.m.
